Mentoring Coalition Forms to Benefit Students

Mentor Coalition

Several local organizations and individuals have formed a coalition to mentor high school students to enhance their future opportunities. The group working on the STAR Scholars & Workforce Readiness Program include: Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, St. Lucie County Education Foundation, St. Lucie Public Schools and Dr. S. Darrell Lee.

Dr. Lee helped launch a teen mentoring program in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Clubs in 2015. Due to the success, the program has expanded and other partners have joined.

The goal is to match up individual students with local business partners to help nurture their learning experience. St. Lucie Public Schools through their CTE program will interview and select students based on their interest and classroom performance. A student with an automotive interest will be matched with a participating mentor. Medical, automotive, banking and several other business categories will participate in the launch of the program.

“This is an exciting program,” stated Dr. Lee. “The students will learn first-hand what is required to be successful in a chosen field.”

Thom Jones, President of SLC Education Foundation is recruiting business partners who are interested in keeping our best students here in St. Lucie County. “It is a great opportunity for local businesses to work directly with students to help build their future work force.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs and the St. Lucie County Public Schools will be coordinating the program. Students will meet with their mentors several times during the school year to learn about the business. They will be given an opportunity to visit the local businesses and in some cases internships and summer jobs will be available.
