About Wound Care
Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process of restoring cellular structures and tissue layers. Whether a result of accidents, infections, or surgeries (like lacerations, contusions or abrasions) these common soft-tissue injuries are frequent problems resolved by the precision of a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. S. Darrell Lee. As a leading cosmetic expert, Dr. Lee will use the concept of a "reconstructive ladder" to determine the severity and type of treatment needed to provide the best outcome. Typically, the more complex the wound, the more comprehensive the surgical reconstruction, closure, and healing. Some wounds may not require reconstructive surgery but nonsurgical treatments that will aid in proper recovery. Dr. Lee will be able to discuss the pros and cons of all your option during a private consult at Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center in Port St. Lucie, FL.
Common Types of Wounds
A wound can occur for many reasons such as a trauma or surgery. Typically, a wound would fall under one of the three most common categories:
An abrasion is a wound that is caused by scraping or wearing of the skin. These types of injuries are superficial and lay on the top layer of the epidermis. Other names for these wounds include grazes or scrapes. An abrasion is the most minor of the three wounds and often requires minimal treatment with little to no scarring.
A laceration is a deep cut or tear of the skin. These types of wounds are also known as a gash, cut, or tear. These injuries are usually jagged or irregular in nature because they are often caused by a foreign object. Minor lacerations can be closed with adhesive tape or glue but deeper lacerations will require stitches.
A contusion is an injured area of skin that has resulted in a bruise. This wound is typically caused by a direct blunt force to the tissue. Most contusions heal quickly, but severe bruising can lead to deep tissue damage and can cause other complications if untreated. There are multiple therapies that can assist in healing.

"Success - Totally happy with what Dr. Lee did for me. I went to him for wound care after getting an infection after my hip replacement surgery. He was great throughout all of the procedures he did on me and explained everything as he went along as what he was doing. The appointments I had with him were never rushed and he answered all of my questions. I'm extremely pleased with the results. His staff..."- B. / RealSelf / Apr 11, 2017
"I had surgery this morning, (August 02) to remove some basal cell skin cancer with Dr. Lee of Lee Plastic Surgery & Laser Center. It was very easy with the whole procedure. Dr. Lee put me at ease and explained everything to alleviate any concerns I had. His staff and those at Blue Water Surgical Center were friendly and professional. I was referred to Dr. Lee by the Martin Memorial Wound Care Center and they were spot on, the very best. I've had negligible pain and have needed no pain reliever. I hardily recommend Dr. Lee and Blue Water without reservation."- M.B. / Facebook / Aug 02, 2018

What to expect
Treatment time and recovery will vary from patient to patient. Minor abrasions and lacerations may require stitches and bandaging which often takes 5 – 10 minutes to perform with optimal healing occurring within 5 – 7 days. Deeper wounds that require surgical reconstruction will vary in treatment time and take longer to heal. It's important to follow all pre- and post-operative instructions provided by our office to aid in optimal healing. Swelling, itching, bruising, and redness are common symptoms of wounds but pain reducers may be prescribed if needed. A follow-up appointment is often scheduled within a week from the initial treatment to review your progress.
