About Laser Tattoo Removal

For any number of reasons, people often opt to have a tattoo removed from their body later in life. Perhaps it resembles a painful memory. Maybe it's simply lost its color or just doesn't represent who you are anymore. Whatever the reason, advancements in tattoo removal equipment have made it feasible to lighten and potentially remove the undesired tattoo altogether. At Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center in Port St. Lucie, FL, plastic surgeon Dr. S. Darrell Lee offers tattoo removal with a sophisticated laser system called Q-Switched Nd:YAG by Lumenis M22™. This highly advanced technology has proven to yield better results than traditional tattoo removal systems and might even require fewer treatments when compared to other systems.

Ideal Candidates

Fitting candidates for laser tattoo removal are healthy individuals with strong immune systems. A strong immune system assists the body in breaking down and disposing of the ink properties once they have been laser-treated. Those with a healthy diet who do not smoke often receive the best results from laser tattoo removal treatment. Additionally, having a strong contrast between the ink color and the color of your skin yields better results.

Procedure Technique

Before beginning your laser tattoo removal treatment, Dr. Lee or a member of his team will carefully cleanse the skin around the treatment area before applying a topical anesthetic. Next, Dr. Lee or the technician will begin the procedure by passing the Q-Switched applicator over the surface of the skin as it emits laser light and pulsing energy. Treatment times vary between patients and depends on the size and type of the treatment area. Sometimes, the tattoo may require a number of treatments before obvious results are seen. This will all be discussed at your consultation.

What to Expect

After each treatment, an ointment will be applied to the treatment area along with bandages to keep the area protected. You may have redness, swelling, and sensitivity. You could also feel a sunburned sensation and experience minor scabbing. It is important to follow aftercare instructions carefully to speed up the healing process. Once the area has healed fully, your next treatment session can be scheduled. Dr. Lee recommends scheduling treatments around 4 – 7 weeks apart.
