What is Emsella?

While it can be a point of embarrassment for many, countless people around the world suffer from various forms of urinary incontinence, including leakage and difficulty holding urine. Fortunately, the dedicated staff at Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center is here to help. EMSELLA is a noninvasive treatment designed specifically to strengthen the pelvic floor, allowing for greater control of the bladder. This can be an unbelievably easy and effective way to alleviate your incontinence issues without the need for surgery or any form of invasive techniques. Patients will simply sit in the state-of-the-art EMSELLA chair for 30 short minutes, and within only a few sessions, their bladder issues will be a thing of the past. We are always happy to help anyone struggling with urinary incontinence in the Port St. Lucie, FL area by connecting them with Dr. S. Darrell Lee. After listening to their unique concerns, he will determine whether or not EMSELLA might be the proper treatment for them.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Emsella?

While urinary incontinence is typically associated with women, especially post-pregnancy, men have been known to have their share of incontinence issues as well. Ideal candidates for EMSELLA should not have a bleeding disorder, be pregnant, or have any surgical implants in their body. On the other hand, you may qualify for EMSELLA if you have:

  • Urinary leakage
  • Involuntarily urination when you laugh, cough, or sneeze
  • Difficulty making it to the bathroom on time
  • The immediate need to urinate as soon as the sensation hits you
  • The need to schedule frequent bathroom breaks during the day
  • Recurring urinary accidents
  • Can also help with sexual health in both men and women

How Does Emsella Work?

Many alternative procedures require patients to remove their clothes or wear a paper gown. With EMSELLA, patients can relax in the comfort of their own clothes while undergoing the treatment. Once patients sit in the EMSELLA chair, Dr. Lee will turn on the device, which will begin to emit electromagnetic energy. Patients often report feeling a slight fluttery sensation as this energy causes their pelvic floor to quickly and consistently contract. As with any other muscle, these contractions build up strength, and in turn, grant increased control of the bladder. Though it might sound strenuous, this process is actually incredibly gentle. In fact, most patients find themselves comfortable enough to read a book or have a conversation until the treatment is over. In total, this process usually takes around 30 minutes, making it easy to fit into even the busiest of schedules.

What to Expect After Emsella

Due to EMSELLA's noninvasive nature, there are no restrictions associated with it. Patients are free to go back to their daily activities as soon as their treatment has ended. In order to further improve the results of the treatment, there are certain changes you can make in your everyday life. For example, we recommend for many patients to cut back on items in their diet that are natural diuretics, reduce caffeinated beverages, and ensure their medications are not contributing to their problems with incontinence.

Some patients report minor improvements after only one session of EMSELLA. However, multiple sessions will be required before patients are able to regain complete control of their bladder, though the exact number of treatments will vary from person to person. In most cases, our patients notice optimal results after six sessions. These appointments will generally be scheduled once or twice a week over 2 – 3 weeks until your pelvic floor has become strong enough that urinary incontinence is no longer an issue for you. In some circumstances, the strength of the pelvic floor may again start to deteriorate. In these situations, we usually recommend regular "maintenance" sessions in order to preserve its condition.
