About IPL

Many times, a gorgeous complexion can be temporarily plagued by sun damage, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation, keeping us from feeling 100% about our appearance. However, Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center in Port St. Lucie, FL offers an effective, noninvasive treatment with Universal IPL by Lumenis M22™. IPL (intense pulsed light), often called a photofacial, is a rejuvenating skin treatment for patients with hyperpigmentation that affects their face and neck. Though IPL is not an invasive procedure, it is highly effective for the treatment of many common skin conditions and provides outstanding outcomes. Plastic surgeon Dr. S. Darrell Lee recommends IPL because it warms the skin cells beneath the surface of the skin, igniting the natural regeneration process and increasing collagen production. In time, you receive a healthier complexion with more even tone and fewer spots of pigmentation. Contact one of our offices today to schedule your session.

Ideal Candidates

IPL works in the deeper layers of your skin to improve many complexion problems (especially brown lesions and sun spots) with little or no recovery time. Ideal candidates for an IPL photofacial at Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center may have problems with their complexion, such as sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, visible pores, redness, freckles, melasma, sun and age spots, or dilated capillaries. Dr. Lee, or a member of our team, will examine your skin to determine whether you are a candidate for IPL at your private consultation.

Procedure Technique

Your IPL session will be completed at our Port St. Lucie, FL office in one of our treatment rooms. If no other treatments are performed, your session could be completed in around 20 – 30 minutes. To begin the treatment, your technician will clean and dry your skin before protecting your eyes with special laser shields. The IPL photofacial is performed using the Universal IPL handpiece, which is passed over your skin while emitting laser energy pulses. The technology can be customized to the specific skin condition being treated so that you receive dramatic results.

What to Expect

As IPL is not an invasive procedure, there is no recovery time needed, but you may leave your appointment with mildly swollen and/or pink skin. These symptoms will decrease naturally as the day continues and can be concealed with cosmetics if you desire. Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center recommends patients apply an ointment on the treated skin to minimize irritation and promote healing. You may also take anti-inflammatory medicine to ease any swelling that occurs. Over the next 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities that rested under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then begin to flake away. It's critical to protect your skin with sunscreen at all times after an IPL photofacial and not pick at the flaking skin. While you will see some improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple IPL sessions. Dr. Lee suggests most patients receive 3 – 6 sessions around once a month for the best possible results.
