Developing saggy, drooping eyelids as we get older comes as a normal part of the aging process. But when tired or grumpy eyes stare back at you in the mirror—even during your happiest moments—you might feel unable to express your true emotions.
Fortunately, upper and lower blepharoplasties, or eyelid lifts, reduce sagging skin around the eyelids to help you appear more alert and well-rested.

What is eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, otherwise known as a “blepharoplasty,” removes excess skin from around the eye area to create a livelier, more youthful appearance.
As we age, the eyelids stretch, causing the muscles to weaken and excess skin to gather around the eye area. Patients choose to undergo eyelid surgery to address a variety of aesthetic concerns, including:
- Baggy upper eyelids
- Excess skin that blocks peripheral vision
- Sagging lower eyelid skin
- Under eye bags
- Bulging fat pockets
At Lee Plastic Surgery, we primarily recommend eyelid lifts to patients who want to tighten the area around their eyes and minimize wrinkles.
What is the difference between upper and lower eyelid procedures?
Though they both address the eyelid area, upper and lower blepharoplasties target different aesthetic concerns and use different surgical techniques.

An upper blepharoplasty uses an incision made along the natural eyelid crease to remove excess skin, muscle and fat. This portion of the procedure reduces drooping to create a more vibrant look.
Alternatively, a lower blepharoplasty uses an incision underneath the lash line to cut away excess tissues. This portion of the procedure removes the puffiness that often creates unwanted eyebags.
Dr. S. Darrell. Lee at Lee Plastic Surgery can complete upper and lower eyelid lifts separately or at the same time depending on your aesthetic preferences. Lower eyelid lifts only require twilight anesthesia, which places you in a drowsy, sleep-like state. Upper eyelid lifts, the more invasive procedures, require general anesthesia when paired with a lower eyelid lift to keep you unconscious throughout surgery. We can use local anesthesia when performing an upper eyelid lift by itself.
