About PRP
Thinning hair is often a significant and embarrassing concern for Port St. Lucie, FL area patients. Some of the common causes of thinning hair may include age, genetics, hormones, health conditions, or styling practices and/or products. With recent advances and clinical studies into hair restoration, new treatments are being created to help combat the common issue. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a state-of-the-art nonsurgical treatment for men and women that is showing remarkable results in slowing, stopping, and reversing hair loss. Ideal Candidates
Any man or woman experiencing hair loss is essentially an excellent candidate for PRP hair therapy while patients with early hair loss usually yield the best results. PRP is best suited for those with androgenic alopecia, which is an inherited type of hair thinning that most often occurs on the top part of the head. For women, this may appear as a broadening part with normal hair thickness at the backside of the scalp. Patients with sections of "weak quality" hair growth of the scalp with normally reacting hair follicles usually have the greatest results with PRP hair regrowth treatments.
Procedure Technique
A nonsurgical procedure, the PRP treatment is a brief 60-minute in-office visit. The session begins with obtaining a small amount of your blood and putting it in a specialized machine, which spins the blood at high speed to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. After that, a local anesthetic is used on your scalp and the concentrated platelet-rich plasma is introduced into parts of your head that are thinning or bald. Finally, microneedling is performed on the scalp to create micro-trauma and micro-channels to the skin, which triggers the PRP and permits it to seep deep into the skin. Our routine for nonsurgical management of hair loss consists of an initial therapy followed by maintenance treatments approximately every nine months.
What to Expect
There is a minimal recovery period necessary following this procedure with practically no limits or restrictions. If anything, patients may develop some discoloration, a headache, and swelling that could travel down the face. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While results differ for every patient, aesthetic results are usually seen approximately 4 – 6 months after the initial session and will continue to improve up to a full year following therapy. Although PRP alone cannot reverse or prevent future hair loss, 3 – 6 initial sessions followed by yearly maintenance sessions are recommended for the best possible results. It is necessary to remember that PRP does not develop new hair follicles in places where you're already bald. It is utilized to help reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create healthier, thicker, longer hair fibers.
